Ideally, 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding. That gives people enough time to plan for your event but not so much time passes that they forget all about it.

6-10 weeks before the wedding.

First send out save the date notices, as soon as you pick a date, then about 8 weeks before the wedding send out the actual invitation.

Ok this is how I did it. I was getting married on September 30th. They had to RSVP by August 15 and I sent them out on July 30. That gave them 2 weeks to figure out if they were coming or not but not too much time to forget to RSVP and then 6 weeks till the wedding. Worked out perfect. Everyone RSVP'd and just about everyone came too.

You mail them out six to eight weeks before the date that your caterer needs the final head count.

No less than 4 weeks prior for in-town guests and 6 weeks for out of town guests.

All the wedding etiquette books say 4 weeks before.
