When should you have an engagement party?

Question: When should you have an engagement party?

I recently got engaged on christmas day. Do you have to have an engagement party? If so how long should you wait from the actual engagement until the party?

First, congrats! Second, you don't have to have an engagement party and the notion that it's a required part of the whole wedding extravanganza is fairly new and fairly regional. I'm not saying don't do it, but if you do, it should be a smaller type event and one where gifts are not expected. You can have it any time you want, but keep it simple and keep it about the happy couple.

Don't have the party until yuo know when you are getting married. imagine everyone asking you, "so when's the big day " and you say, " I don't know we weren't going to get married until I get out of shcool and he has a job so it could be a few years.... "

Well, you can't throw yourself one. Someone else would do that. Unless you are from an affluent family they are really seen as tacky these days and an excuse for more gifts. Think about it. You are having a party to celebrate that in a year you will all get back together again and have another party.

Engagement parties are usually reserved for couples with a particularly long engagement. They are typically held one to three months after engagement and no sooner than one year before the wedding. Traditional etiquette says you do not host your own engagement party. These are typically done by one or both sets of parents. That said, I’ve known quite a few younger couples who host their own party. If you are planning to get married within a year of your engagement, skip the engagement party.
