Can i still have an engagement party?

Question: Can i still have an engagement party?

(Posted by: oakenfoldgoddess on 2010-01-24 13:40:49)

Hi, my fiance and I got engaged in August of 2008. We had our daughter in October of 2008, and since then it has been hectic with the baby and then the economy crunch, so talks about the wedding have been on hold. We recently began discussing our wedding plans, and haven't set a date YET, but have started planning financially for the big day. My question is this, since we've already been engaged for about a year and a half, are we still "allowed " to have an engagement party? Is it appropriate since we've been engaged for a while already? Obviously I do know that we have to know WHEN we're getting married, and throw an engagement party well ahead of sending out save the dates, but I was just wondering if this was alright or not? Thanks. While I appreciate your response and respect your opinion, having a "courthouse wedding " absolutely is not in the cards for me. Just because you have a child does not mean that all your hopes and dreams are thrown out the window. I'm still entitled to have the wedding of my dreams, and I plan on doing that. But thanks. Thanks SJ. A much better option. I appreciate it. Suz, my child already has a 529 college fund. We are very responsible parents and aren't strapped for cash. But 50k for a wedding is a nice chunk of change, not including the 30k that was spent on my engagement ring. I just believe that this is really the "last " event that is really about ME, bc I have a child, and I want to go out with a bang, LOL. Suz, my child already has a 529 college fund. I would save the money and just have the wedding. If you wanted to celebrate your engagement just go out to dinner with your family and his family and keep it really small. Or have them all over for some appetizers and drinks along with your absolute closest friends. I'll be engaged for one year this February ... I didnt have an engagement party but I feel like it's a little too late to celebrate it.

Engagement parties are usually held with 4 months of the engagement (according common ettiquette rules). You have been engaged for well over a year ... there really isn't any point on celebrating such "old news ", especially since you have had such big news (the birth of your child) happen in between the engagement and now. I think it would be silly to have an engagement party at this point, really it would just be an extra party in your honour for what most will see as a pretty flimsy excuse. Save your money to put towards the wedding.
