Engagement party etiquette question?

Question: Engagement party etiquette question?

(Posted by: Tiny on 2010-06-26 05:28:29)

My parents want to throw an engagement/ going away party for me and my FH basically to celebrate with their friends. Those friends are not all going to be invited to the wedding, and I figured I should also include people who will not be invited to the wedding because of budget constraints. I was not aware that was considered rude, since the party and the wedding will be a year or more apart, and I'm going away and won't be seeing a lot of these people before the wedding. Some people are coworkers, and I won't probably ever see them again. Is this still rude? @Fizzy, no reason to lash out at me because I was about to make an honest mistake. Haven't we all made them? @Messykatt, thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully my mom won't object, since she's nearly rabid about having an engagement party.

If the engagement party and the wedding itself are more than six months apart, then its appropriate to invite some people to the engagement party and not to the wedding.

Yes, its always rude. Why would want them there if you arent going to see them again, anyway? You dont invite people who arent invited to the wedding. What is this, some consolation prize? No. You cant have everything, you have to draw the line somewhere. Not everyone you know is going to be a part of your wedding, and you need to accept that.

Why don't your parents just throw a going away party? Once you call it an engagement party, rules do come into play as to who can be invited (and, yes, it is rude to invite people who won't be invited to the wedding) Besides, engagement parties aren't mandatory, and people leaving their area usually don't have them. With a going away party, your parents can invite whoever they or you want.
