Question: How much to give for an engagement party?
(Posted by: GingerCurtis on 2010-07-22 11:23:45)
I was invited to an engagement party this weekend, it is at a hall. I am totally lost on how much to give as a present. I was thinking anywhere from 50 to 100. I live in New York and people always seem to do things bigger here, so I don't want to look cheap I don't think I am get away with giving nothing.... I hate these things lol |

Engagement parties are not gift giving events. Many people like to show up with a bottle of wine, etc. but handing over cash just because someone gets engaged doesn't make sense! These parties are supposed to be about letting both sides of the family, and closest friends, meet each other. They're not supposed to be huge events, and I've never heard of one in a hall. Parents usually throw them at home. |

An engagement party is not a gift-giving occasion, so don't worry about it. If you feel you must bring something, bring a bottle of good wine. |

You don't have to give that much. $25 - $30 in a "congratulations " card is plenty in my opinion. At a hall? The only people who should be invite dto an engagement party are close friends and family. :-| Also, keep in mind that you're going to be invited to the bridal shower and ceremony later. EDITED - You're right. I'm a NYC native also. I gave $25 for the last engagement shower I attended. Many people brought gifts. I saw them. |

You don't have to bring one. But something is nice and something for the host too since they are entertaining you. I personally don't think you need to bring something as expensive as $50. My money is mine and I worked for it so I don't care if my gift isn't the same price as anyone else's. I would give some wine, some chocolates, a gift certificate, something edible that's homemade, etc. |
