Question: Is it ok to make my own invitations?
(Posted by: Sara on 2007-07-06 23:03:17)
I decided to try to make my own wedding invitations because I just can't bring myself to pay hundreds of dollars for what is basically paper. I mean I figured the whole point of an invitation is just to get the word on time and stuff (and kind of set the tone). So I bought very nice quality textured paper, found a good font and the perfect color ink to match my wedding and printed them out. I think they look good. Then I started reading way too many bridal magazines and now Im worried that it's "not appropriate " to make your own invitations. Would you think an invitation that wasn't engraved or letterpress or calligraphy was cheap and stupid? |

Those magazines are just under pressure from the invitation company to say that crap. you go ahead and make your invitations! they will be more personal and will match your wedding better. why shell out all that cash for something you can do at home?! it is just an invitation after all, they are important, but they should not cause you to break the bank. oh, i forgot to add that i also made my own :) no complaints here. |

Do your own. That's great. When I received invitations made by the family of the bride, I thought they were just great, because they were truly what the bride (and groom) wanted. You had the right idea! Did you like the invites before looking at bridal mags? If yes, then stick with it. C'mon, you know that publications are all about marketing--especially bridal magazines. You smart girl, you beat them at the game. Way to go! |

No! Throw those darn magazines away and get stuck into the project, they are absolutely better than the standard stuff you pay way too much for and they are truly unique. |

It IS ok to make your own invitations, if you are meticulous enough to do it right, which it sounds like you are. I made my own, and people were actually commenting on how beautiful they were, and I knew that they wouldnt have said that had they been the "usual made-to-order " invitations. It sounds like youre on the right track! If you need any extras, visit paper-source.com, such nice stuff and very reasonable. |

Bridal magazines are just different options that you have my husband and i made our own and we got many compliments on them this is your wedding and you need to make it all about you and what you like not about what others like! So i guess what i am saying is no i wouldn't think your invitation was cheap and stupid! |

My sister-in-law (now happily married to my brother) did invitations individually made with two types of handmade Japanese paper and ribbon. They were gorgeous, and I guarantee the guests had never seen anything like these, and they did not look cheap in any way. If you are good at crafts, go for it! A word of caution: I made handmade invitations for my wedding. I bit off more than I could chew. It took me several agonizing weekends to finish the project. Although they looked nice in the end, I got to wishing that I had just bought invitations and saved myself the headache. Know your limitations. Good luck, and congrats on your marriage!!!! |

I made my own wedding invitations and everyone kept saying how beautiful they were. Besides it felt more like us ( my husband and I) We chose the colors, the wording, everything. They won't look cheap. Add a ribbon and send em out. People really don't care about that. If people think you are cheap then you don't really need them there. |

If they look nice and you and your groom are happy with them, then yes they are fine. Look thru all those invitation books and there are thousands of styles, colors, designs. It's an individual decision and you pick what best suits your personality, style and budget. |

First of all, u can do whatever u want. It's Ur wedding u make Ur own decisions regardless of what other people think. Just like people make their own decision by getting married somewhere else besides a chUrch. Because getting married in church is known. So make ur own invitations. |

People DIY (do it yourself) a lot of things for their weddings, I am, to me it seems way more practical, personalized, cheaper really, but still nice. There are a ton of pics on theknot.com if you'd like ideas on other DIY projects. |

Upon getting the invitation from my niece and her fiance to their wedding a few years back, I was quite suprised and impressed, by the fact they had made them themselves. I thought they did, a wonderful job! If that's what you want to do, go for it!! |

My husband and I made our own invitations and had many compliments on them. Same with our programs. He did the printing. I did the crafting, etc. On the invitations, I simply added a small pearl bead to the cover to "craft " them. They were beautiful! They looked VERY professional. I learned caligraphy and how to emboss things for the envelopes and for the programs. |

I think its a very good, cost effective, idea. Don't listen to those stupid magazines!!! 4 issues ago, they probably had an article on how to make your own invitations! Its like the Good Housekeeping magazines that have all the great diets that works article on one page and a double chocolate fudge cake recipe on the next page! My mom made my invitations and they were beautiful and got lots of compliments! Have fun and best wishes to you and your husband to be! :) |

I made my own and they turned out great! Go to wal mart and look in the wedding aisle. They should have a large selection of Wilton wedding invitations. Pick out your favorite, buy them, and then go here wilton.com/ printyourown/ They have a program on that site that sets it up for you (lines it up), has all different fonts and ways to word the invites...and all you have to do is add your name and other info..or quotes or whatever you want on there. Make sure you have a printer that prints words well..and dark. Mine came out perfect, they look just as good as a friend who paid around $200 to have her invitations printed....and they only cost $15 and some ink! |

Make your own...Make your own...Make your own. Wal-Mart now has invitation and thank you cards and I have made a killing. I did my brothers, my cousins and an aunt. It is so much fun to diy. Bridal magazines just need to make money for the bridal shows...don't listen. It's cheap for you and making them yourself is basically making them a part of you...DIY GIRL!!!! |

I made my invitations, and the total was $25.00 for 100. This would have cost so much more if I would have had them done elsewhere. I am looking at a copy of the invitiation right now, and I bet no one knew I made these-they look great. You are smart to spend money for your wedding elsewhere, and not for paper. |

That's the problem with bridal magazines - they are out there to tout the products of their advertisers, but that's not the 'real' world. There is NOTHING wrong with making your own invitations. I think the biggest thing you have to guard against in smudging! We have received some LOVELY wedding invitations which were made by the couples! |
