I really want to make my own invitations?

Question: I really want to make my own invitations?

(Posted by: Newly Married on 2007-08-21 10:45:41)

I think it will be more personal to make my own. My wedding is going to be pretty small so it wont be a huge task. I was just wondering if you noticed that someones invitations were home made (on the computer probably with a program) would you think that it was cheap, or would you appreciate that it took my own individual time to create them? It will probably be obvious that I didn't purchase them. Thanks for your responses :)

You are a lady after my traditionalist heart. Did you know that commercially printed invitations were long considered an inferior imitation of "real " handwritten ones? By all means, make your own invitations but make them traditional -- handwritten on good paper. If that is too much handwriting, then at least leave enough blank space to insert up to two names and handwrite that part. Both spaces are used only when a couple does not have the same name, as in Mr & Mrs Robert Goodfellow request the honor of the presence of Mr Paul Newman and Ms Joanne Woodward at the marriage ... etc Otherwise, only one name goes in the space. No "and family " or "and guest " allowed -- each person, even a small child, gets his or her very own invitation with his or her own name written on it. (The exception is married or darn-near-married couples, who are issued a joint invitation.) The "invite by name " rule is to keep boorish guests from using your wedding as a means to entertain guests of their own, at YOUR expense. If you are kind enough to allow Cousin Fred to bring his newest love interest, then get that person's name and send that person an invitation of his/ her own. (Trust me on this. You DO want control of your guest list.) Skip such modern innovations as RSVP cards, save the date cards, and so on. These are more to serve the printer's interest (sell more stuff) than the brides (do it elegantly and correctly for minimal monetary outlay). To give people notice in advance of the invitations, send them an informal note or even an email with the approximate date (early February) and when to expect an invitation (before the holidays). Skipping the RSVP cards will cut your postage expensives in half, and save you getting aggravated at people who don't use them or fill them out incorrectly. You will want to phone to confirm them anyhow, so why bother?

I made my invitations..I went to a scrapbooking store and bought cardstock that had a shimmer on it, and then printed the invite up on velum sheets - stuck them together with little heard brads and ribbon and that was it. They turned out really cute and I got alot of compliments on them. There is a really pretty wedding set out right now that should be in your local scrapbook store. Its cream colored with a light light brown and baby blue. Very pretty and simple, and that is the key when you make them - keep them simple but with your own personal stamp on them. Have fun! I got my bridesmaids together one day and we made them and had a great time.

We use the wilton brand of invitations and used a downloaded program and created our own. My friend got married a few weeks before us and our invitations looked just as good as hers. And with it being small u can add other personal touches. Add ribbon, etc. We saved alot of money doing our own, and I had fun doing them. It didn't take very long at all. Congrats!!!

I did my own and had so much fun doing them, I have three other weddings to attend within one month of my own and everyone did their own, and if you want they have kits at crafts stores or even Wal-mart (where I got mine) that will help you along the way. Go to wiltonprint.com and see if you like any of the designs they have and go from there.

I would have done it if I had known 5 years ago what I know now - things weren't as available back then. To me I wouldn't think twice about receiving an invite that was made by the couple or if it had been printed by the Royal printer of England - not to be cruel, but who cares?! I think people have more things to worry about in their lives these days than dissecting a wedding invite. So go right ahead and make them exactly how you want, you'll know the time and effort you are putting in to it as well as the money you are saving and if someone doesn't appreciate it, don't waste your time getting upset - it's a small part in a big day!

Well i think that you could actually make them yourself- with card, glue, glitter, stmaps (craft stuff)- flick through card making books and magazines for some ideas and copy them. If you want to you could make them indivdual for each person comign to your wedding:)

From my own experience, definitely go with your idea and make your own! I decided to make my own (I just finished them last month) and the cost for everything was $45... compared to the $300 that some companies will charge you, I feel that it was definitely a better deal. The invitations came out absolutely stunning and I don't think anyone would know the difference between a store bought or home-made! I just feel like it is much more personal when you take the time to do each one, so go ahead and put your heart into them! Your guests will definitely appreciate your effort :)

There are books and websites on making paper, some can be made from flower pedals, if you apply the script with a stamp, consistency problems will not prevent the invitation from being readable. I would advise against, just printing up invitations from your computer...(If you really want to make them yourself, and not just due to lack of money) ... I think rose pedal paper with calligraphy stamped lettering would look good, and you could even apply gold leaf (available at craft stores) Good luck

My good friend just got married and did her own invites, and they turned out really nice. It's not difficult to find paper at a local shop, or even buy it online try lcipaper.com/ specialty i've been looking at making my own invites on their paper as well. And knowing you took your time and effort to make them, ppl will love them!

I desigined my best friend's wedding programs with Microsoft Publisher. Everyone thought they were professional done. Use good quality paper (you don't have to spend a ton of money for it either) and most people won't know the difference.

I think that it can go both ways, some may think it cheap like you didn't want to spend the money for real invitations, which I think will probably be the majority. Your arsty ppl will appreciate the home made invitations. Its your wedding and I wouln't worry to much about what other ppl may think. If you really have the desire and ability to create your own invitations then go for it.

I think it is great when people take the time to do things themselves...nobody does that anymore. I think it is a great idea and hey, it will save you money and that is very helpful.

Making your own invitations is a good idea. I mean if it's really a SMALL wedding. My mom does that kinda stuff...like for my graduation party but we made over 50 cards and it took about 2 months. It was hard. If you have the time i'd say go for it. The guests will know you put hard work into it.
